Getting Cheeky with it!

Man I love that guy's work! My good ( although sadly aged ) friend, Jeff Johnson and I were discussing the upcoming Spiderman animated series in development and we were put together a "Dream Team", if you will. My first thought was CHEEKS! Sean Galloway that is! This guy is awesome! He's got himself an incredibly fresh style and approach. I'd love to see more shows done with his aesthetic in mind. Of course, I'd love to see what Jeff would do as well! He's got a fantastic Superman animated drawing up on his blog at the moment. I would really enjoy seeing Jeff's vision for Spidey! He's been doing character design on the 2nd season of Boondocks along with some backgrounds! His transition from comic books to animation is seamless!

Anyway, I got so riled up about Sean - I had to bust out a Cheeks inspired turn around sheet! I tried to make it look as much like a model sheet as I could but - it's just a concept. Who knows what Sony will land up doing. I just did this for fun and because I dig the guy's work! Cheeks has some turn arounds on his site that are superbly done! He's a forerunner in a whole new generation of artistic expression in animation/illustration.

Enjoy, and don't forget about that AIDS Marathon I'm running! Have a great weekend!

very nice.

I am dreaming or is he involved in
HellBoy animated series?

I'm a bit torn on that Sean Galloway stuff. There is certainly much talent there, however it all seems so cold and asexual. Shouldn't a superhero have one of two qualities: you either want to be him/her or sleep with him/her? Dan's Spidey is cool, but it's freaky. I would crush it if I found it in my house.

I await the opinions of those much wiser than I.

Ya... Dan's Spidey looks like an alien. Jeff's Supes has some pretty-boy sex appeal.

Wow!
Wonderful, funny, articulate style!
I surrender!

Pat, he's a bug. That's the way the mask was designed to look.

He's not Thor.

Peter Parker looks like a regular kid/guy. He has super strength not super mucsles.

BRIAN: Yes, he's worked on the Hellboy animated show as far as I know.

RURAL: Also, just because I interpreted Sean's head that way doesn't mean he actually would. Sometimes he flattens out head shapes on top. He's a wild man, which is why he's an exciting artist.

No... he's not a bug. He's wish-fulfillment for nerdy Math Club geeks. He's the cool, wise-cracking guy who got muscles over-night and gets Mary Jane Watson. The last thing a nerd wants to be is even more bizarre looking.

Let's settle on insect. That's what he's based on.

Not every comic book reader has the same fantasy. Some like Superman and for some reason, some like Green Arrow...

But, the Spiderman is the Ditko Spiderman. He was a skinny kid in a bug suit.

The fantasy is this: I'm in this awkward body ( and maybe I feel like an alien in a world filled with regular people ] but when I'm Spiderman I can do amazing things despite the fact that I'm basically a geek.

You can can put a mask on geek but you can't hide geek.

'Nuff said.

I think the first cover of Spiderman destroys your theory Panosian.

I can't argue with you when you giggle. So precious!!!

Urban Barbarian said...

This wasn't a giggle though. More of a chuckle. I hope the result is the same.

I will see you tomorrow at Gold's. Prepare to die [ albeit, with pumped arms ]!!!

Please put tourniquets on my arms (ala The Ultimate Warrior) so I can keep the pump for the funeral.

Good model sheet, Dan!

HOWARD: Thanks! I actually just finished reading the Gun Fu, Showgirls are Forever book you gave me at SDCC. I really dug this issue! Well done!

Has anybody seen Dan? I haven't heard from him since his thorough thrashing at the Mecca. Through the whole workout, he kept muttering, "This isn't like training with Jeff Johnson." On a sad note, afterwords we had a moment of silence for Big Timmy. We miss you, brutha!!!!

Urban Barbarian said...

I'm okay... I guess. My arms ache the ache of old women forced to sew garments for sweat shops. I weap.

As for Big Timmy... I fear we won't be seeing his hulking shadow in the gym for some time! I weap again...

I wish that the last time I saw Timmy was when he fled to the East Coast, healthy and happy. Unfortunately, I saw him at the SD ComicCon a few years ago. I could tell then that he didn't have much longer. I kinda blame myself for not intervening, but I guess it was too late.

Nice one Dan. Good peg on Sean's style. I wonder what he would think.

Urban Barbarian said...

Thanks Mike! I emailed him but I heard from Howard that his connection is down. He's doing all sorts of great things with color so I kinda feel like this would be "three years ago" for him.

Love it Dan. You really got his style and coloring down! Really like how you simplfied the webbing too. That's the hard part in animation- the dang webbing!

To all inetrested we worked with Sean on the new Speed Racer toys and animation project that is being put out by Art Asylum. Sean's design are second to none it was a pleasure to work in his style.

Also funny somebody mentions The Ultimate Warrior - because we also work with him on various stuff (comics, t-shirts, toy designs) - contrary to poular belief he is actually a really cool dude.

BILL: Thanks! Great idea!
MANTAUX: Appreciate you stopping by!
MARTIN: Wish I could say I came up with the style but it's just my homage to Cheeks!
TOM: That's my favorite part actually. Using the webbing to define the form without making it too complicated.
ROB: I worked out with the Ultimate Warrior once in Florida! I was a big fan! I'd love to see those Speed Racer designs! Wow! Sean is amazing and brings so much life to whatever he touches. Blast his crazy skilz!

Dan, dude my brother and I consider ourselves pretty fit and healthy - work outs four times a week and jogging every night but when we stayed with the Warrior in his home in AZ he took us through a leg workout at his personal gym and no friggin joke we could not walk for two days. We had even more respect for his physical achievements after that.

Anonymous said...

Rob... Unfortunately, Dan doesn't know what "leg workout" means and cannot understand your post.

Ha! Ha! HA! So all the posing photos of him he's standing knee deep in water. You have to get that pump brotha!
