Some more sketches from that sketch club. A little Drinking and Drawing to set off the New Year properly. Jeff Johnson picked me up at the Wee Hours ( along with his director, Dan, from Boondocks ) and we drew for a few hours. Even after drawing all day, I'm surprised at just how much is left over when you're inspired and in good company.

Also these two sketches look great for me!!
I'm always amazed how you can draw great images in goog company!!
Laura:)
Dan,
I've always loved your work. I gotta make it out to the Drink and Draw sessions. Inspiring as always.

Patrick
Excellent.
Kickass.
Delicious.
Man i love that bottom one! Great use of value. And i looks so much like her without losing any appeal!
LAURA: Thanks Laura, I get very inspired by all the artists at these things!
PATRICK: Anytime! In fact, there might be a Drink and Draw this Sunday night...!
HARPER: All good things! Particularly in that order!
AARON: Thanks! Those dreadlocks of hers are insane. Great expressions too. See you next week hopefully!
Cool sketches as usual, Dan!
wooo, i like badly this sketch session. everytime i drop here, it's a pleasure for my eyes (ok, it's not an original comment, but it's soooo true!)

Nailed! great stuff dude. thanks for letting aaron and i peep at your insane sketchbook.
wonderful relief quality to the images.
I love the top one and all of the sensitive shadow/highlight work in the image- very subtle.
Excellent as always! I really like the addition of value with the crayon. It seems so loose, yet everything is in its place.
Really beautiful these last illustrations, men !!!!!
;D
Hey Dan,
Great sketches and Happy new year!
You've just inspired me to do a "Drink n' Draw" session tomorrow after work. Sadly I might be the only one attending:(
Well, all the best and good luck in 2007!
Take care,
Hans
Dan, I was wondering if you could help me out. I've just been approached about a pencilling gig and have no idea what to quote as a page rate. The last time I did any comics work was around 1995. Can you fill me in?
mikeofottawa@sympatico.ca
Thanks.
Yeah, I'm glad my buddy Aaron introduced me to you. I loved seeing these in person. I'm blown away how quick you're workin! Great technique that I wanna try soon! Cheers!
such an inspiration man. you amaze me each post. well done X 10.
Wow beautiful stuff!
so good stuff from such goog company, men!!!
to hans: if i was out there i'd draw with ya! :)
woo! i like badly too!
can't go wrong with topless babes huh?
very nice use of crayon
Dan, These are fantastic!!:)
Great drawings!! Love the loose lines!
Awesome! I love the one with the gun. I love chicks with guns. Ok, I just love chicks. :)
fantastic stuff!
MOST DELICIOUS!!! Phenominal work Dan! Would love to wield a quarter of your magical talent!
Awesome stuff dude, I just stumbled on to your blog from Howard Shum's
Sketches? You call them sketches? Wow, man, these are fantastic-well-done studies about the female condition!
Great, Dan, like we say in Spain: "cabronazo!, que bien dibujas!"
;-)
Solid as usual.
Dan, congratulations, the first one is magnificent. Beautiful but mighty at time. What kind of "pencil" did you use for these sketches?
Well... Cheers!
Saludos!
Bravo!!
Thanks everyone!
MICHAEL V: Rates really vary, especially when you're breaking in. Even $25 a page isn't unheard of from independent publishers. If you were at Marvel/DC I would say anywhere from $100 to $250 is a solid range. It even gets higher if you're on contract.
COMIX GUY: Thanks, amigo! I'm using marker and pencil though. Crayons aint' a bad idea however...
JOHNSON: Typical Jeff being too modest. His sketches from the same evening are always perfection!
DAVE RAPP: I guess I should say thank you... I guess...
ANTONIO: A very, very soft lead. Derwent Graphic 9B. They're made in England.
crayons:
worth a shot dan
lets see what you can do with them
if you say yes, can i pick the character?
COMIX GUY: Hypothetically speaking, which character would you choose for the crayon masterpiece...?
hi dan!
comikx guy here:
how about alberto ruiz's mayan samurai(ya know the one he and bobby chiu did)vs. chun li
or just one or the other
also it was tony c. who said crayon first but if it gets you to do this i'm all for it :)
and it will be a masterpiece since you will be doing it :)
crossing my fingers!
COMIKXGUY: So it was Tony C, eh? I guess it's easy enough to confuse the two. I have a set of crayons I always eyeball before going to these drawing sessions but never land up taking. Alberto and Bobby would be a tough act to follow... You may have to settle for one of the models at loft. BTW, my friend Tim Townsend owns that original drawing of the Mayan Samurai. Lucky bastard...!
Thanks for the info Dan, that's just what I was looking for.
i say try it anyway
i think you would do a great job
don't you want to use those crayons?
it doesn't have to be those characters, any would do
thanx anyway for taking me up on the offer :)
and damn right, tim is one lucky bastard, maybe tim gave alberto a handjob for it?
me, all i got was a print of it
btw no, i didn't give alberto a handjob or anything else for that matter :)
thanx again
COMIKXGUY: I just may give it a college try! And never shake Tim's hand. Just on principal!
Some of your strongest sketches yet Dan. Wha- Hoo.
BILL: Thanks! I'm trying my little heart out!
ew! gross!
Wow! these are great.
