Red Sonja Survivor!

Nice title, huh? Well, only one of these versions will make it to the next level! We shall see. The top one is a bit more interesting and moody while the bottom version incorporates some Frazetta -esque color stylings on the background, etc... I'm torn.

Dan, that is fricking cool. I hope Nick appreciates you!!!;)

I love the top one personally.. but if I were running the comic company.. i'd probably choose the bottom one.

If I could make a humble suggestion..

Damn! I like that too! Very "300"! I'll pass that along to the editor!

Gary Clair said...

oh.. and btw.. this kicks all sorts of ass!!! You continue your title as Art God!!!

Urban Barbarian said...

You are far too kind oh Great Garloo!!! Thanks for the tip and taking the time!

freakin fantastic dan!!!!!

Gary Clair said...

Ohhh.. yer right.. it does look like 300. D'oh!

Splitting the difference.. keeping it desaturated except for a path from the head to the blood on the sword..

and then putting a "bitch'n" lens flare on it.. ha ha...

That kicks Dan!

Love the top one myself.

I love the top one as a single illustration or pin-up but I really prefer the bottom one as a cover. My only beef is that the skin is a bit too yellow/orange and that there is too much black. Maybe if some purple from the bg was introduced into the shadows within her form it would make her look more alive.
Just my .02.

Dude, that Ironman splash is the awesome-- and Red is tasty too.

Jesse said...

For the love of, well, stuff, the top one.

Urban Barbarian said...

MEL: Thanks a bunch!

GARY: Lens flare rules!!!!

DOMINIC: Me too! It turns out so does the editor.

RLS: I see your point. I had that feeling in the beginning. It probably should of been colored in a very flat sense to go along with the inking style. Very good point.

HARPER: Thanks mi amigo!

JESSE: You said it!!

Wow...Dan you shocked me a time more! The bird eye view a bit tilted works perfectly in this pic! I mean...I wish to be Conan for just 1 hour....

Beautiful. I love the 'towering' perspective, and those incredible shadows--really sets the mood. I'd choose the first if I had to make a choice, but they're both terrific!

I second the general opnion and say I like the first one better, but the bottom one is probably more suitable for a cover which has to sell the book... oh well! Love the pose btw, great impact!

tough call.
beautiful,beautiful work!

the top one calls more attention to the blood and hair- and IMO creates a darker late afternoon mood- with a stronger more cohesive story point.

the bottom one has some nice sky color that is missing in the top version. The character feels seperated from her environment a little.

it is a tough call because you see lots of variety on the racks- I guess it depends on what it will be sitting next to.

Top! No doubt. Coincidentally, I just read some Roy Thomas & Frank Thorne Red Sonja this morn. Mmm.
Lovely drawing as always!

Dan!
I'm back, brother. I had to pull a Bobby Fischer for a minute and re-access my art. However, thank you for the continuing support on my old blog during my leave of absence. I'm posting new again on a blog I call, "Blacklight Fantasy".
I'd love it if you could leave some insight on my work, homie.
'Till then, this Red Sonja piece is out of control. Nice execution of perspective, bro. Very inspiring!

GUGLIE: Me too... Everyday... ;)

CHRISSIE: That was the hardest part of it for me. That angle. I'm not used to drawing that way.

POGGY/BRIAN/JEFF: That seemed to be the general feeling. Thanks!

TRAVIS: I'll check it! Glad you're back!

LAURA: Thanks, but I forgot the nose ring and lip piercing, right? ;)

BILL: Hmmm... I'm tempted to try that... But the editor is really taken with the top one and the whole thing took some convincing. I'm scared to push it with them at this point but it gives me ideas for futures works. Thanks as usual.

Nice camera angle. The moody one is definitely the winner! BTW, I love all your artwork. They are soooo awesome. I am also a storyboard artist and it is great to know there are other artists injecting their pride into their art.

Either or man - they both kick the booty!!! That face is priceless. Awesome to see you progressing left and right since the old Continuum Comic days...I may have to send the Spanish mafia cross country to squeeze a Galtow cover or something out of you...

EVERYONE: Thanks! Much!

ALLEN: I see that a bit... I drew and re drew that face so many times it's hard for me to really look at it objectively. For some reason it was really difficult. When I sketch around for fun that sort of angle/drawing is effortless but I tend to stiffen up a bit when it comes to print work.
