Ahoy!

So this morning Ross Ritchie from BOOM gave me the beat down... "Your cover isn't cutting it." [ well, actually he was as nice as he could be about it, in truth ]

You know what? I kinda agreed. Even before I sent it, I wasn't thrilled with it [ see last post ]. It's good in theory. Standing on the treasure map with the big 'X marks the spot' thing. But as Ron Garney mentioned to me - it' s more Captain Morgan than Pirates of the Caribbean. So... I banged this out today instead. I couldn't bring myself to revisit the first one again. Like most artists, doing revisions is just about the most gut wrenching experience.

So out with the old and in with the new! Check out the comic book review at the infamous Comic Book Resources website!

That's an awesome pic for a cover! I love what you did with the lighting, especially the shading on the face. What're you using to get these GREAT colors, man?

Thanks Travis! I'm just using Photoshop but I'm making sure I use "white" as a color. It really punches things up, IMO.

Incredible. Love the lines and the colour.

Good work! I like the second version better too. The first version has some really good things happening (very playful), but the second version seems to evoke more "story."

CRAIG: Thanks a bunch! They really dug it!

CHRISSIE: Wow! Very flattering! Thanks!!!

ALINA: I kind of modeled him after Orlando Bloom in a sense - so maybe some of that Lord of the Rings Flava carried over!

Great composition and colour... Both of pirates are mighty, but also the sketches that you post a week ago (smooking ones)... All are really great! Congrats!

I love this.

This is better than Diet Cherry Coke.

GOOD JOB!

Very nice, wizard! Us artists know the economics behind your decision to "just redo it"....I doubt you got payed twice for it! I applaud you for that! To be as talented as you are and still make sure you produce your best on every job is inspiring to us fellow pencilpushers! So, is that you in the drawing?

MARTIN: In my book, you're the Chuck Liddell of artists!

Hmmm... why do I want to see a beret?

Urban Barbarian said...

There can only be one reason. One plausible reason that makes any sort of sense: Much like an UrbanBarbarian - YOU ARE A FAN OF THE BARBARIAN BROTHERS!!! Peter and David Paul!!!! Long live the Barbarian Brothers!!! Here, here!!!

Really amazing stuff....

MIKKO: Thank you kindly! Saw your Cintiq illustrations! I'm still trying to get to the point where I'm comfortable using it instead of paper.

Looks great! The character on the first cover is really cool, but there is much more story and mysterious pirate hero over this one. Love it!

The DOODLERS: Of course, of course!

KRISTEN: Elena said the same thing. Oddly I did have hair like that once... Ah, the 80's...

You had Fabio Hair?? Ha! I want to see a photo of you and your Fabio Hair! Did you ever grow a Mullet? I had a fem-mullet when I was a kid :P

Urban Barbarian said...
